Basic Information
- Source: Extracted from the roots of Lepidium meyenii, a plant of the Brassicaceae family.
- Appearance: Usually a yellowish-brown, brown or reddish-brown powder.
Main Ingredients
- Bioactive Substances: Macaene and macamides are the unique bioactive substances of maca, accounting for approximately 0.6% in the maca extract. They can increase the number and motility of sperm.
- Alkaloids: There are various active alkaloid components, including imidazole, A (Lepidium meyenii alkaloid A) and Lepidium meyenii alkaloid B, etc. They act on the hypothalamus and pituitary gland to regulate the functions of the adrenal gland, pancreas, testis, etc.
- Glucosinolates: The main active components of maca are benzyl glucosinolate and benzyl isothiocyanate. The fresh maca root contains about 1% of glucosinolates.
- Sterols: It includes β-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, etc., and the content can reach 0.03%-0.04% in the dried maca root extract.
- Amino Acids: Rich in amino acids, it is abundant in essential amino acids for the human body and branched-chain amino acids with important physiological activities.
- Other Components: It also contains active substances such as taurine, plant polyphenols, saponins, flavonoids, coumarins, etc.
